PayPal acts like a “pal,” unfreezes the Diaspora* community’s donations

Just wanted to give you an update on the ongoing PayPal saga.  The GREAT news, of course, is that it’s been resolved!

Basically, PayPal sent us an email yesterday announcing that they have restored our account.  A PayPal executive also called and apologized profusely.  As a result, we have initiated a withdrawal from our PayPal account of nearly all the previously frozen community donations.  For those of you who still have recurring donations with PayPal and are worried that they might not be honored, fear not!  PayPal has guaranteed us that they will flow uninterruptedly.

As you may know from our previous blog posts, Silicon Valley startup Stripe came to our rescue in our time of need and worked intensively with Dan to help get us up and running.  In the process, we got to know John, Patrick, and the rest of the Stripe team.  They are truly awesome.  We’re deeply indebted to them and will continue working with them going forward.  BTW, if you’re a developer and need a payment service, we strongly recommend Stripe.

We’d also like to thank PayPal’s executives for doing the right thing in this situation.  As we noted in our previous blog posts, we had done nothing wrong and there was no explanation for PayPal’s mysterious actions, but at least PayPal executives acted quickly to resolve the matter.  So thank you, PayPal.

And to all of you:  Thank you, thank you, thank you…  We can’t thank you enough!  We truly appreciate all of your tweets and emails to PayPal demanding that our account be unfrozen.   We’re humbled by the extraordinary outpouring of support we received from all of you.  The success of this community-driven effort just goes to show what we can accomplish when we work together in a grassroots way to encourage corporations to do the right thing.

If you have any additional questions, please let us know.  We’re always happy to answer them.  Just a heads up:  We’ve fallen behind on our email, but we promise to respond to all of them as soon as we can.

Thanks again,
